level : open to students that have successfully
attended all courses at the introductory level and a second-year course.
aim and content : to provide, in a first ("core") section
of four or five meetings, an overview over the history of multiculturalism
in the usa, as a framework--both 'factual' and 'discursive'--within which
key issues of contemporary u.s. hispanic literature (puerto rican, mexican,
and cuban american) and its theory and criticism can be placed. to identify
critical tools that will deal with selected u.s. hispanic texts in a manner
we can find satisfactory; to (learn how to) apply them to those texts;
to do both of these things both orally and in writing. presentations on
texts and approaches to them; discussion.
preparation : a cursory reading of the anthology of 'core' texts
before the beginning of the semester.
assessment : regular attendance, discussion, group work and presentations;
optional seminar paper.
